Theory
1.Introduction to Photography
Meaning and definition of photography. Basic principle in conventional and digital photography, History of photography.
2. Camera
Basic camera, different parts of a camera and their basic function, camera accessories.
3. Types of camera
Classification
of cameras on the basis of film size, focusing arrangements, viewfinder
systems and general usage. 35mm compact, 35mm SLR, Digital SLR, 120
film type TLR and SLR, instant (Polaroid) cameras, large format cameras
and various digital cameras.
4. Main controls on a camera

Lens: Construction of a lens, compound lens and lens elements. Lens coatings. Characteristics of lens such as focal length, speed of lens, angle of view, wide-angle lens, normal lens, telephoto lens and zoom lens etc. |

b) |
Shutter: Construction and types of shutter. Shutter timings and shutter speeds. Use of specific shutter speed depending upon lighting conditions, type of photography etc. |

c) |
Diaphragm: Construction of a diaphragm. Aperture and their corresponding f-numbers. |
5. Exposure
Meaning and definition of Exposure. F-number and shutter speed relationship, equivalent exposure settings.
6. Film & Digital Image sensor
Introduction
to a photographic film. Meaning of emulsion. Types of film,
characteristics of film such as film speed, graininess, gradation and
contrast, exposure latitude. Construction of digital image sensor,
Pixel, Resolution and Sharpness, ISO settings, etc.
7. Depth of field
Meaning
of depth of field, factors affecting DOF such as aperture size, subject
distance and focal length. Making use of the knowledge of DOF in
photography.
8. Lighting
Light
as the main raw material in photography. Characteristics of light such
as natural/artificial source, intensity, form, nature of light,
direction of light and colour of light. Different lighting equipments.
Conventional studio lighting for portraiture, still life (Tabletop)
etc. Meaning of key/main light, fill light, direct or bounced light.
Use of reflectors and diffusers.
9. Photography with flash
Types
of flash units, electronic flash gun. Manual and auto flash operation.
Portable flash, studio flash unit with its accessories such as
umbrellas, soft boxes, spot grids etc.
10. Automation in camera
Various
exposure reading systems in SLR and DSLR. Exposure automations such as
aperture priority, shutter priority and program modes. Auto focusing,
auto winding, burst modes in DSLR and DX coding systems.
11. Close-up photography
Meaning of close-up/macro photography. Supplementary lenses, extension tubes and bellows, macro lens. Photomicrography.
12. Filters in photography
What is a filter? Types of filter, U.V., Polarizing, ND, Soft Focus and other special effect filters
13. Photography as an art and composition.
Photography
as a medium of creative art. Meaning and definitions of art. Meaning of
composition. Elementary rules of composition. Rule of thirds, figures
and lines. Composing different types of subjects such as portraits,
landscape and action.
14. Introduction to colours
Colour
films-Negative and Transparency, Theory of light and its colours.
Primary and secondary colours. Getting correct colour balance in a
photograph and setting white balance in digital camera. Custom white
balance. tolours, Primary and secondary colours, complementary colours, colour of light, etc
Practical sessions
1. Outdoor
a) Outing 1:
Basic camera operation such as holding the camera firmly, setting
exposures manually, focusing correctly and composing a picture,
releasing the shutter gently etc. To learn effects of different
exposure setting in the same light condition. To learn effects of
different shutter speeds and apertures.
b) Outing 2: To shoot a landscape, candid shots, outdoor modeling with frontal lighting and back lighting, use of reflectors, macro photography, to learn to use close-up lenses, shooting action shots with panning, freezing etc. To learn to use Depth of Field Preview.
2. Indoor Practical Work
